Compounding

What is Custom Compounding?

Have you been experiencing side effects or having concerns related to your current medications? Custom compounding may be the solution you are looking for! Custom compounding is the act of curating prescriptions to better work for specific allergies, dietary restrictions, or personal preferences. Our pharmacists create medications that better fit the individual needs of our patients by customizing a strength or dosage, reformulating the drug to remove unwanted ingredients, or changing the delivery method of the medication.

Low-Dose Naltrexone

When used in low doses, the opioid-blocking drug, Naltrexone, has potent anti-inflammatory effects. When we refer to LDN, we’re talking about doses that are a 10th or less of the standard dose. LDN is typically used in doses of 4.5mg per day around bedtime and blocks the TLR4 receptors on the glial cells in the central nervous system. When those receptors are activated, the glial cells release inflammatory cytokines that are responsible for auto-immune response seen in many conditions, including the following:

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Lupus
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Chronic Lyme Disease
  • Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome

    Hospice & Palliative Care

Hospice patients have specialized, individual needs. They are often unable to tolerate many of the conventional medication dosage forms or need specialized concentrations of medications. Compounding allows a patient to receive personalized care in an end-of-life situation. We’ll work closely with your doctor to suggest therapies that will alleviate a patient’s pain and discomfort. Compounding is also beneficial because many hospice patients are unable to swallow, and we can provide medications in a variety of different dosage forms, including the following:

    • Suppositories
    • Transdermal Creams
    • Troches
    • Lollipops

    Wound Care

Our compounding pharmacists can create custom-compounded medications that can be applied directly to wounds. These medications can be designed to stimulate new tissue growth, reduce pain, and discourage bacterial overgrowth. We can prepare them in different forms of applications to better match the type of wound, such as sprays, creams, or gels.

        Mitochondrial Disease

Mitochondrial diseases are long-term, genetic disorders that occur when mitochondria fail to produce enough energy for the body to function properly. Mitochondria are responsible for creating more than 90% of the energy needed to sustain life and support growth. When they fail, less energy is generated within the cell, and cell injury and even cell death can follow. Our compounding pharmacists work with prescribers specializing in the treatment of Mitochondrial diseases to compound pure vitamin forms into proper dose and dosage form.
